Great Poppy, easy to grow, and brilliant colors
The previous 1 star review is way off. He doesn't know anything about poppies. The Danish Flag is the exact same species of poppy grown in Afghanistan and elsewhere. This is a variety of an Afghani cultivar of the papaver somniferum bred for it's coloration. It's only called Danish Flag because of the colors and cross. But if he's ever seen a classic Afghan poppy he'd see the pattern is exactly the same, the red is just a lot redder in the Danish Flag variety. The Danish Flag is easy to grow as long as it has decent soil, enough space, full sun, and fairly dry conditions around flowering. Plant in the late Fall or early Spring. At germination and lettuce stage they prefer a shorter 12 hour day, at flowering they prefer a 16 hr or longer daytime. Try to plant where you intend to grow, they hate transplanting, and it will stunt their growth. Can be grown in pots with varying results depending on the pot's size. Keep them well drained. More than I expected, fast
I bought three different types of poppies from this vendor, and I think the service merits that I post the review for each purchase.I ordered Danish Flag, Turkish Black, and Peshawar White seeds. I haven't grown them yet, so I will come back to write reviews after I have. But so far, I have been pleased that:1. The package arrived three days earlier than anticipated.2. Finally found what I am after
This supplier obviously has gardening in their blood, as the package I received had been put together with great care and attention to detail. Love the little seed packets, and full instructions given.I have been looking for Lauren's Grape for some time now, although I did not know it's name until now. I saw it growing in a garden I visited, and thought wow!! I have to have some of that. I had only got photographs to go on for comparison. Apparently Great Dixter has trialed it, and it had great reviews. Unable to get anyone to part with some seed here in the U.K. so I decided to go further afield.Whilst searching I also found this lovely white specimen. Can't wait to see what happens with these two specimens in 2010.Will definately keep this seller in my favourites for future purchases.

Excellent Seeds
I purchased these along with the organic white somniferum and the gigantium. I'm close to a mile above sea level here in Utah with no growing experience with poppies. It will be interesting to see how they come along. I love gardening but generally like to grow only a single specimen of each thing which perks my curiosity. These can self polinate so I shold get viable seeds with only one plant. The poppy is a perinial so it will die at the end of it's growth cycle. Also, the flowers only last a few days before they fall off. So it's a lot of work for a small amount of gratification. I think it's well worth it though.I basically ignored the lengthy growing instructions that the company provided free. Well, I'll say that I did read the entire thing but only slightly followed the instructions. For one, I didn't plant the seeds, but instead sprinkled them on top of the soil as suggested. Worth the read just for the sake of intrigue
I bought this book because some friends and I were joking about opium and I decided I wanted to learn more about it. While I don't think I will ever produce opium for recreational or medicinal use, the book has renewed my interest in poppies as a colourful, beautiful flower that come in a huge variety of forms.The book is informative on the nature of opium and poppy products and many of the important opiate alkaloids found within. The book goes on to describe other products of poppies, morphine to heroin for instance, but this was of less interest to me. My main concern was actually the flower and its direct products, rather than products of its products and etc.I wish it was more detailed on the actual plant biology aspect, outside of opiates, but I understand that Hogshire is not a botanist and is not as interested in such things as the details of the roots or the poppy seed capsule's exact design.
